Description

The visual depicts the first battle between native Filipinos and Europeans. The bravery of the local chieftain, Lapu-Lapu along with his tribal warriors
spawned legends on how they defeated the Spanish
forces with their powerful artillery(guns, swords, cannons, crossbows, body armor) and killed their leader
Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in Mactan Island,
a few kilometers to the southeast of Cebu, Philippines on April 27, 1521. This is indeed the first historical triumph over the Spanish invaders. Today, Lapu-Lapu is honored as the "first" Philippine national hero to resist foreign rule and he is commemorated by a monument in Mactan, as well as a city bearing his name. Likewise, Magellan is given dubious honor of bringing the first vestiges of Spanish colonization to the Philippines.
This piece measures 50 x 64.3 cm on a 2 ply bristol board.
