Carl B. Williams: Jim MacTravers – Drummer
What an unusual strip, to say the least. ‘Jim MacTavers – Drummer’ ran in the ‘Cincinnati Enquirer’ (and only there) from September 1908 through January 1909. The strip appears to be about a futuristic city in which everyone uses rocket propelled balloons and blimps and Jim MacTravers is some sort of salesman. The artwork seems to emulate Winsor McCay with a dream-like, fantasy style (let’s keep in mind that McCay had been the head of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s art department from 1901 to 1903)
In a 1904 directory, Carl B. Williams is listed as an artist working for the Cincinnati Enquirer and living on Larch street in College Hill, a Cincinnati suburb. He is still listed as an artist for the Enquirer in a 1918 directory. In the 1920’s and ‘30s he gained fame for illustrating the ‘Seckatary Hawkins’ books by Robert Schulkers.
Williams had a daughter Caroline (1908–1988) who worked as a sketch artist at the Cincinnati Enquirer from 1932 until her death. She left no heirs; when her estate was auctioned off in Cincinnati in 1996, those four strips (all strips to be found in the estate; likely 100% of all Carl Williams artwork still in existence) were purchased by an antiques dealer and then dispersed. By pure coincidence, they all ended up in my collection over the years, from various sources, miraculously, one after the other.
