Akira
Original production art from "Akira," a landmark 1988 cyberpunk anime film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, is based on his own manga series of the same name. Set in a dystopian 2019 Tokyo, the story follows Kaneda, a biker gang leader, and his friend Tetsuo, who gains destructive psychic powers after a mysterious accident. As Tetsuo's abilities spiral out of control, the city is plunged into chaos, and long-buried secrets about a government experiment called "Akira" are revealed. Renowned for its stunning animation, complex narrative, and cyberpunk aesthetic, "Akira" has had a profound influence on the genre and remains a cult classic in both anime and science fiction. The traditional cel animation in "Akira" is widely regarded as a technical masterpiece. Each frame was meticulously hand-drawn, contributing to the film's fluid and dynamic visual style. The animators used an unprecedented 160,000 animation cels, far more than typical anime productions of the time, allowing for an extraordinary level of detail and smoothness in movement.
