What is it about a rowdy town on the great Canadian praries, that it has been home to perhaps the two most influential comic artists of their respective decades? John Byrne. Todd McFarlane. Reading Byrne's "Showdown at the Stampede" (X-Men #121 on the bus to school completely changed my life. You can even see the comic shop I started going to in one of the panels. I don't have any great stories about grabbing Byrne art dirt cheap although the Comicshop (on W. Arbutus) in Vancouver sold most of his pages for between $50-$90. Byrne went to the same high-school as my uncle, and its a great yearbook shot. Years later, local boy Todd McFarlane did a fill-in of "All Star Squadron" and then took over on Roy Thomas' love-letter to the Golden Age, "Infinity, Inc". He made a bit of a splash later on. After taking over on Infinity Inc Todd's art used to fill walls at comic stores in Calgary and Edmonton - most went unsold at the time. Who knew?
