Years ago in New York, two friends went to visit another common friend; he was at work and was drawing an horse, but the strange was that he was swiping that horse from a sunday page of Mandrake…. Seeing this, one of the two visitors said : “ But, Alex what are you doing ? I swiped that horse from one of your sunday pages of Flash Gordon !! “ This nice anectode was told by the inventor of Mandrake during a lunch with the Friends of The Phantom in the middle 90’s. The three friends were, of course, the scriptwriter Lee Falk (creator of Mandrake and The Phantom), Phil Davis (artist of Mandrake) and the “genius” of the comic art (never surpassed) Alexander Gillespie Raymond (artist of Secret Agent X9, Jungle Jim, Flash Gordon, and Rip Kirby). Swiping from other artists is normal in the comic art field, and this don’t reduces the qualities of the artist. In these days I read in internet terrible comments against an artist who swiped various pictures !! Boys, where is the scandal ? Greatest artists of the past painted masterpieces using models and looking at the art made before !! Swiping does improve the qualities of the artists, and if an artist is great, he is great also when he swipes. Hurrah for the SWIPE !!
