Like many people who grew up in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I participated as a comics buyer when Marvel Comics Group had another 'boom' period with upcoming artists like Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, Ron Lim, Scott Williams, Erik Larsen, Marc Silvestri, and.....yes, Rob Liefeld. I remember Rob Liefeld when I attended my first SDCC in 1990 at the Civic Center. He was sitting at a table where he had activity and was cordial in talking to the fans, but it was not the mob scene around him compared to the 1991 SDCC in the new Convention Center. I was not a fan of his art, but, in 1990, he seemed like he was at the fore of a changing dynamic with large character compositions coming right out at the reader. The character that he co-created with Louise Simonson, Cable, only seemed to cement his reputation. I will not make any comment or opinion to his activities post 1991, but he was on top of the comics world with several of the other young artists/creators who brought me back into Marvel Comics in the late 1980s.
