Cartoonist ROD ESPINOSA Courageous Princess
Courageous Princess by Rod Expinosa is a brilliant work which breaks the trope of most fairy tales: Princess Mabelrose is the girl who rescues herself from danger. Originally a three-part comics limited series from Antarctic Press released from 2000 to 2003, Antarctic published a handsome Courageous Princess Masterpiece Edition hardcover. I showed this book to a Alameda County Library graphic novel committee and we ordered 10 copies for our system. Rod's book had high circulation and was worn out until we have no copies left except for an e-edition. Dark Horse published a 6" x 9" Courageous Princess softcover collection in 2007. The publisher announced plans for a Courageous Princess trilogy in 2014. The company published the original work as Courageous Princess Volume 1: Beyond the Hundred Kingdoms in March 2015. Courageous Princess Volume 2: The Unremembered Lands in June 2015, and Courageous Princess Volume 3: The Dragon Queen in September 2015. Rod's creator-owned works include Neotopia, Prince of Heroes, Battle Girlz and the current series Adventure Finders. He's created the Adventure Kingdom game. Rod produced a series of steampunk fairy tale adaptations for Antarctic Press and Dark Horse. For an educational publisher, Rod created comics on historic events, historic figures, and Shakespeare stories. We use to see each other regularly in San Diego, but I stopped going in 2014 and Rod gave it up after 2015. We had a happy reunion when Rod signed at Brian Hibbs' Comix Experience in San Francisco in January 2020. Rod won a contest and is going to Angouleme in 2020.
