I recently was contacted by a Texas original art dealer about an estate. It turned out to the be estate of a photographer Caniff used from about 1946 to 1954 (perhaps longer, I don't have information beyond what was in the estate). The lot consisted of only 2 original pieces of art, an number of prints, a number of large photographs and many negatives. There was also a letter and a few other typed pieces to go along with it all. Overall, an interesting find for a Caniffite such as myself. Below are the photos and proofs from the estate. There are many more negatives than I showed, even more than there are on the proof sets including a few color negatives which were pretty rare at the time these were taken. Perhaps in the future I'll sort through all of those and get some printed. If you are doing any research and need a larger scan of anything in this gallery for an article or whatever, feel free to contact me.
I should note that although this is a hypothesis, I believe that this photographer was involved in the print making process for Caniff. If you check out my Caniff prints gallery you will see a decent collection of these here. Among the photos were photos of prints as well as unused prints with hand written dimensions on them. It is interesting to me to see thses prints as on some the signature is part of the print and in others it is not. In some of the Caniff reference books they mention that Caniff's goal with these were more to be used as model sheets and for promotional material and the coloring and sending off to fans was more of a secondary purpose.
