Smith, Wallace
Wallace Smith (1888-1937) was a fascinating cartoonist and Hollywood screen writer. He was closely connected with author Ben Hecht, and illustrated notorious Fantasius Mallare in 1922. He also wrote the screenplay for the David O. Selznick production of Viva Villa. Smith had ridden with Pancho Villa as a Hearst correspondent and Hecht was able to get him hired on as a consultant on the film, which was released in 1934.
Wallace Smith was also an accomplished book illustrator and writer. The Little Tigress — Tales of the dust of Mexico, which he wrote and illustrated in 1923, demonstrated the power of his line work.
The black and white cartoons in this gallery come from a series called "Wise Cracks by Joe Blow", which ran in the Chicago American, a Hearst newspaper, and Chicago Literary Times, a paper established by Hecht in 1923. I've been through the pages of the Chicago Literary Times and did not find any published versions of these panels. In fact, there were very few "Joe Blow" panels printed, so I can only assume that they appeared in the Hearst paper.
The two watercolor/gouache paintings are character pieces from a production of The Purple Mask. I'm not sure if this was from a Hollywood movie production, or some sort of the theater production, as the show ran in a number of venues.
Wallace Smith died from a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles on January 31, 1937. He was 48 years old.
