Brick Bradford
Brick Bradford was (and is) my most beloved character. Despite to Flash Gordon that aside few little spots of SciFi was instead embued with Fantasy, in Bradford I always felt the real SciFi in comics. You could say: “you didn’t mention Buck Rogers!”. Right!, but this is, of course, an Italian point of view, where, while Flash and Brick were familiar since the 30s, Buck Rogers was rarely published up to the 60s and only with the later strips. To see the early Buck’s strips we had to wait early 70s. In any case, since then, I always felt Buck stories more distant and “colder” than Flash and Brick ones, even because if its “ugly” drawings. Brick Bradford great idea was the “time travelling”. In this way he told us (as a teacher) of past civilisations, from the Roman empire to the Aztec one. It was like a great frescos of the Man’s history, from the cavern to the stars. The strip began in 1933, both daily and sunday, and was created by William Ritt (script) and Clarence Gray (art). After Gray’s death, in 1952, Paul Norris took over the strip until 1986. I had several sundays and dailies of this charcter of different period. Here there are some: more will be posted in next weeks
