Last year, I was invited to tag along with Felix Comic Art on an excursion to Tokyo. Accompanied by Felix, friends Yams and Lambert, and his amazing stable of artists, we descended upon Tokyo in September.
It was quite the experience. The artists were there to drink in Manga—they all certainly knew a lot more about that medium than me. We hit bookstores and toy stores (Mandarake!) with a vengeance, and had a blast. I was there to experience Tokyo, and determined to walk away with some hard to find Godzilla toys from the 60s. I found them, thanks to Felix’s impeccable navigating, and was thrilled to acquire some very affordable, hard to find vinyl figures that I would have paid a small fortune for on eBay or from dealers.
At night, the artists sat in the hotel courtyard drawing until early morning. And when the trip was finished, they gave each of us a very thoughtful sketchbook. Mine, was big ole’ Green skin. And here it is. Thanks to DWJ, Nick’s Dragotta and Pitarra, Gary Brown, James Harren, Chris Mooneyham, and of course Felix, for being a solid friend and for inviting me along.
