Na-na-na-na-na Batman!
It's hard to believe there's been so many iterations of Bruce Wayne's alter ego since his first appearance back in 1939. While he changes with every new creative team he's also timeless in the inspiration he provides. He's one of D.C.'s 'Big Three'-- an iconic staple of the company that's gained recognition so wide that he's ubiquitous on a global scale.
Batman is a mass of contradiction within a stable exterior. Batman He represents the irony of human nature -- using violent means to bring peace and justice to the world. He’s a wealthy member of the social elite yet also relatable as an everyman. He's a vigilante who works with and is indispensable to the police force. And he’s the lone wolf who is an excellent team leader…
The Bat Family of characters has grown through the decades to include four incarnations of Robin, Alfred, several female Bat themed allies include Batgirl, Batwoman, Spoiler and others. There's also Batwing, Harold, Azrael, and many others. Each of these characters fill roles missing in Bruce Wayne and Batmans life. Traditionally, Robin provides a light in Batman's dark world of crime fighting. Batgirl brings some femininity to an otherwise testosterone soaked setting.
In this gallery you'll also find characters that started as support characters or foes that have become taken on lives of their own --not only in the Batman pantheon, but also in the larger D.C. universe.
There are quite a few commission pieces in here but you'll also find published pieces from by Eddy Barrows, Gary Frank, Hyunsung Lee, Tom Lyle, Tony DeZuniga, Marcio Takara, David Finch and Alex Maleev.
