Sydney Jordan - Jeff Hawke
Sydney Jordan is a Scottish artist best known for his work on Jeff Hawke, a ground-breaking science fiction strip which ran in the Daily Express for nearly twenty years. Often working with his friend, Willy Patterson, who wrote the stories, they devoted themselves to the strip from 1955-1974 transforming the strip from a standard space opera to a commentary on humanity. Jordan's amazing space scenes are enhanced by his early training in aeronautical engineering and you can definitely see the influence of such greats as Tony Weare, Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff and Stan Drake. While not often appearing in the US (other then the Menominee Falls Gazette and syndicated as a Sunday section) these stories have appeared and been reprinted throughout Europe. After Jeff Hawke finished, Jordan created another science fiction strip, Lance McLane, which ran in the Scottish newspaper the Daily Record from 1976 to 1988.
