Dirks, Gus
There appears to be a fair amount of misinformation about Gus Dirks (1879-1902) on the interwebs. Here's what I can tell you: Dirks was the older brother of Rudolph Dirks, of The Katzenjammer Kids fame. Gus Dirks was a terrific artist in his own right, drawing Bugville cartoons for Life, Judge and Puck magazines, along with a newspaper series drawn for the Hearst Syndicate. His Bugville were wildly popular, and were noted for his wonderful hatching technique employed in the drawing. Very sadly, Gus Dirks committed suicide in 1902, at the age of 23. Such an incredible talent gone far too early.
