I've had to break up my original Bud Blake gallery, as it's been too difficult to organize all of his different works. This gallery is devoted to Bud's sketches, specialty pieces, drawings and his wonderful preliminary works.
The 23 cartoon roughs came from Neeley Associates, the firm that represented Bud in the early 1960s. As Bud told me when I interviewed him many years ago, "Bill Neeley was the agent for that work. Neeley Associates is probably still going. Agents at that time made 25 percent, which doesn’t seem fair. On the other hand, they usually got you 25 percent more than if you took your own work in yourself, which isn’t a good idea. The agent could dress you up better than you could dress yourself up. I forget what they paid...$350...$400...something like that."
Bud also told me that he believed that the real creativity was found in his rough drawings, as they contained all of the life and energy that he tried to emulate in the finished works. ADDENDUM (3/6/2026): Bud gave me a stack of wonderful Tiger daily strip roughs when I interviewed him in 2004. It's only taken me 22 years to look for the printed version of the roughs, some of which I've now posted in this gallery. It's nice to see the wonderful rambling sketch next to the finished piece.
