Ever since Len Wein and Dave Cockrum's Giant-Size X-Men #1 introduced characters like Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus, the X-Men comics have been known for its diverse and international cast of characters for decades. However, there are some mutant heroes fighting overseas who don't depend on the X-comics to feature their adventures. One such hero is Sabra, the national hero of Israel who debuted in Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema's Incredible Hulk #250. While she's never had her own series, she's carved out one of the most fascinating histories of any of Marvel's international heroes in her various encounters with the X-Men, the Hulk and Marvel's other heroes. Born Ruth Bat-Seraph, the super-agent known as Sabra was raised on a kibbutz ran by the Israeli government after her special mutant abilities revealed themselves. Granting her superhuman strength, durability and speed, Sabra did not suffer from much of the prejudice of other mutants throughout the world. Instead, she was trained as Israel's first superhuman agent, serving in Mossad and the Israeli Police force. Equipped with a cape harnessing anti-gravity technology for flight and gauntlets that fired paralytic energy quills, Sabra was a formidable force. Unlike the many American heroes, she did not have the opportunity to test her mettle against other superhumans quite so often. When the Hulk first appeared in Israel a misunderstanding prompted her to fight the jade giant -- a task at which she proved surprisingly effective. With her paralytic quills weakening Hulk and her own superhuman strength aiding her, she held her own capably in the conflict. Sabra stands out as a powerful and potent symbol of female and Jewish empowerment who too often goes underutilized. There is very little present in the Marvel canon fleshing out what the Israeli government is like in a world filled with superhumans, and most everything that does exist was provided through Sabra stories that deserve to be followed up on.
