Japanese anime artists Haruhiko Mikimoto, Akemi Takada
One of the first dedicated anime and manga convention Animecon 1991 started in the San Francisco Bay area where I live. The organizers split into two factions and we had dual anime cons for a couple years, once on consecutive weekends. Anime Expo moved to Southern California and prospered. All the American anime companies exhibit there and they continue to bring five or six guests over from Japan. The remaining Northern California con Anime America ran 1993-1996. Fanimecon grew up in the vacuum with Hiroyuki Yamaga, director of the anime film Wings of Honneamise, as its annual guest of honor with one or two more Japanese guests. All through this time, my favorite anime store Nikaku Animart in San Jose satisfied my desire for imported art books, soundtrack CD's, and other goods.
