Batgirl (Cassandra Cain)

I didn't read No Man's Land, so I was unfamiliar with who Cassandra Cain was and how she became Batgirl.

But her solo book debut was written by Kelley Puckett, who had become one of my favorite writers on The Batman Adventures, and had stunning art by newcomer Damion Scott, whose fresh, kinetic style was unlike anything on the stands at the time... or since. So I picked it up and was hooked from the very first issue.

Puckett is brilliant at telling single issue, done-in-one stories. It's truly impressive how he is able to pack so much emotion into 22 pages. Coupled with Scott's ability to show emotion in Cassandra's body language, not to mention her facial expressions through the mask, and this was a dynamic duo that produced great comics for a three year run (ably abetted by the lush inks of Robert Campanella).
