The monomyth, or Hero's Journey, was first recognized as a pattern in mythology by Joseph Campbell, who noticed that heroes in mythology typically go through the same 17 stages in their journey toward hero-dom. While this sketchbook didn't start out with a theme in mind, it's gone through it's own stages, which happened to include only heroes appearing in it, thus it evolved into this theme.
