The Wright brothers are credited with the first flight with an aeroplane in 1903 while they were preceeded by the first manned air balloon fright in 1783. These were interesting development In flight with gliders and other planes before the Wright brothers took to the sky but while these were interesting, they didn’t fully grab the public’s imagination until 1927 when Charles Lindbergh with the first non-stop transatlantic flight from New York City to Paris. The use of planes in WWI was also important in developing the public understanding and appreciation for aircrafts. Legends were born of that era like the Red Baron but it seemed to be Lindbergh’s flight that inspired the comics to take to the airs as well. This gallery will include strips that primarily had an aviation theme or backdrop although not all will feature planes. Some strips from other series will be here if they have good aviation content. There are other dedicated galleries like my Milton Caniff gallery to Terry and Pirates and those pieces will not be found here although you will find the Wunder years here. Tailspin Tommy also has its own gallery as do the Russell Keaton Skyroad and Flyin' Jenny pieces. Tailspin Tommy, Sky Road, Smilin’ Jack, Johnny Hazard, Terry and the Pirates, Steve Canyon, Flyin’ Jenny, Barney Baxter, Bruce Gentry, Buz Sawyer, Connie, Scorchy Smith just to name a few.
