Heroes Con 2006
I have to take a moment here and mention that Heroes Con is the best in the country for a reason, and that is Shelton Drumm, owner of the Heroes Aren't Hard To Find Comics Store and our host at this event. Since the beginning of this comics show 26 years ago, Shelton has organized a charity auction, to which artists are asked to donate their art. To make it more fun, They have a stage set up where artists are encouraged to produce a piece where the fans can watch. In 1985, Heroes was the first convention where I was an official guest and given a table in Artist Alley, and this year was 18th time since. I look forward to these public displays both as an observer and participant. I'd been planning my Phoenix painting for weeks, and enjoyed every brushstroke of the 5 hour performance. I'd planned this out weeks in advance, and chose colors that have an exciting splashy effect. The underpainting, all of the shadows were laid in with violet. Then, the yellow was the first color to go in... What an explosion! Next, the light oranges ignited the fire! Finally the cooling green... The auction was fabulously hosted by Gus and Rosario, and even though some of the regular Hamilton collectors were bidding, I met some great new friends in Ellen and Mark, the lovely couple who won the painting. Usually collectors don't let their wives even KNOW that they are at a comic art auction and sneakily hide the expense somehow. In this case, I'm particularly flattered because the collector's wife was encouraging him!! All evening, fans came up to me and introduced themselves just to remark on their admiration for the Phoenix painting and how much they enjoyed watching it being created.
