Tex Avery's Droopy, Wolf & Red by Bill Morrison, et al.
Warner Bros. Archives is releasing Tex Avery Screwball Classics Volume 1 on BluRay to ship February 18, 2020. Animation Scoop provides the 19 cartoon titles which include Red Hot Riding Hood, Who Killed Who?, Bad Luck Blackie, and Dumb Hounded.
Fred "Tex" Avery is one of the great cartoon directors. At Leon Schlesinger's studio making cartoons for Warner Bros., he made the 1937 Porky's Duck Hunt and introduced Daffy Duck. In 1940, Avery directed the first true Bugs Bunny cartoon A Wild Hare and gave him his trademark line: "What's up, Doc?" Moving to MGM, he started off with Academy Award nominated The Blitz Wolf in 1942. The wartime cartoon features three little pig soldiers holding off a wolf with a Hitler mustache.
My favorite Avery MGM character is the dog Droopy who chases an escaped convict Wolf in 1943's Dumb-Hounded and 1946's Northwest Hounded Police. Based on the Robert Service poem, The Shooting of Dan McGoo cartoon introduced the red-headed dancing girl in 1945. She was animated by Preston Blair, author of the Walter Foster book Cartoon Animation. Now called Red, she is a very popular character among animators and comic artists. Dark Horse Comics printed three issues each of Tex Avery Comics & Stories, Droopy, Wolf & Red, and Screwball Squirrel in 1995. I have published work and sketches by Bill Morrison. Another Dark Horse contributor is Stephanie Gladden and I have a great sketch from her.
