Kent, Jack
Jack Kent (1920-1985) is probably most well remembered as a children's book writer and artist. Kent penned some wonderful stories, most of them ones that I read to my son at the local library. Prior to Kent's work in the children's book field was King Aroo, the Ssurreal, sweet and subtle strip featuring the cast of characters from the Kingdom of Myopia. King Aroo is sometimes compared to George Herriman's Krazy Kat, and while Kent corresponded with Herriman as a young fan, the comparison is "epples" and oranges.
As a younger fan, I fondly recalled one of Kent's entries in an NCS publication, depicting himself as the Texas contingent of the NCS. Kent showed himself in the desert, with tumbleweeds, etc. Great stuff.
One of my sorrows in life was not meeting Kent. I moved to Houston in 1985, and contacted Kent a few months later, knowing that he lived in San Antonio. I was hoping to arrange a studio visit. Just a year or two earlier, Kent sent me a sweet specialty drawing, seen in this gallery. Not long after I wrote my letter, I received a nice note back from his wife. Her husband had died due to Leukemia just a couple of months earlier. "He gave it a good fight", she wrote, but ultimately lost the battle.
Jack Kent was a great one, and I hope you enjoy these little gems.
