Wolverine #20 - "Enemy of the State" - COMPLETE BOOK (Romita Jr./Janson)

Mark Millar, John Romita Jr., and Klaus Janson began a year long run of Wolverine in 2004. And, something special came out of that 12 issue arc. It was a single story, including just about every character in the Marvel Universe, and built on to the Wolverine mythos in a way that hasn’t been as strongly felt for some time. I don’t recall many single story arcs going a whole year, and certainly not ones that kept my interest that long. The story line was complex and surprising, and the artwork and storytelling was superb. The first 6 issues were titled “Enemy of the State”, and the last six were titled “Agent of Shield”. There have been many “what if Wolverine went bad” stories, but IMHO none as well done as this one. The first six issues clearly showed how bad Wolverine could really be, and the last six issues showed just what would happen if he regained his senses and went after the people that caused the problem in the first place. As many of you know, I bemoan the loss of words on a page. To me, that’s what makes this literary form unique. But, John Romita Jr. is a very strong story teller and I would suggest that you can follow along without the words. Don’t get me wrong, the words in combination with the pictures is what makes everything work, but as I looked at the story board, I knew just what was going on. So, I’m hopeful that when you see all of the pages to a story, you’ll either remember enough, or can figure out enough to really enjoy the story! I was lucky enough to pick up the complete interiors to Wolverine #20 – part I of “Enemy of the State”. Take a look and see if you can’t follow along. And, don’t miss the last page “money” shot!
