J. Allen St. John - Preliminary Study for JUST FOLKS

A J. Allen St. John original preliminary drawing for the cover to JUST FOLKS by Edgar A. Guest. The art is 6" x 8" and I believe it was done in wolf pencil with white tones. The title is hand lettered and is a good example of St. John's lettering style. This is a preliminary study for the cover of the book "Just Folks" by Edgar A. Guest, published in 1917. St. John started working on Edgar Rice Burroughs' TARZAN series in 1915, and on ERB's MARS series in 1919, so this piece falls right in the middle of an important time in St. John's life when he was making some of his most important, exciting art.
