Q: | Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why? |
A: | That's like asking which is my favourite child. They all are, just for different reasons. I think I would have to say my top is a toss up between the Rocketeer from Adi Granov and the Rocketeer from Felipe Massafera. The Adi Granov Rocketeer is special for many reasons - I love the design and detail in the piece! I love that I got to see Adi work on this in person! I love that I can consider Adi and Tamsin friends. The Felipe Massafera Rocketeer is special in that the depth of color and texture in this piece set a new standard for me. The Detail he put into this piece, the lighting and how it all plays through the colors, the interaction I had with him through the process was amazing. |
Q: | Please tell us a little about yourself. |
A: | I have a beautiful family with 2 kids - 10 and 11 who are insanely creative in different ways. We live in the middle of the Canadian prairies where it is so flat you can see you dog run away for 3 days (yes, I know - it's an old joke)! Currently I am a 40 year old Assistant Manager for Canada's largest organic certification body. I've spent my entire professional career working with organic foods and particularly on the certification end - inspecting and enforcing compliance with private and subsequently federal standards and regulations. My collection I find is a way for me to blow off steam and exercise the other side of my brain. Being fully engrossed in regulatory aspects of my job makes comic and art collecting a true enjoyment and an outlet to feed the creative side of my brain. I would like to say that I do more than collect and on occasion try my hand at painting and airbrush work, though I find it a struggle to turn off the regulatory side of my nature. |
Q: | How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start? |
A: | My collection goes back to the mid nineties. It blew my mind as a University Student to find out one DC's artists - Tom Grummett - was from my home town and doing appearances here. At his periodic appearances he would do sketches and I was hooked. In those days buying actual pages was out of my price range -though I look back now and think - "If I only knew..." As with all collections, this slowly grew from sketches to commissions to pages, etc. Widening out by going to my first comic con in Calgary. |
Q: | How do you display/store your collection at home? |
A: | For the most part I keep everything in portfolio's and frame very little. I feel the need to frame and display a number of pieces in my collection, but struggle with putting these in the light and exposing them to potential damage. Additionally I look at the cost of archival framing and can't help but consider that I could spend that same money on another art fix! |
Q: | What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions? |
A: | So many and I don't think I could rightfully narrow it to 5 only (don't we all say that?!) but I'll try: 1) an Adam Hughes Rocketeer; 2) an iconic Dave Stevens Rocketeer page; 3) a Mike Parobeck Justice Society of America cover; 4) a Mike Wieringo cover; 5) a Darwyn Cooke DC cover. I could go on and through my collection I likely will! |
