Q&A with Jason Wood

Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?

Asking my favorite is akin to asking me to choose a favorite son among my three. It's impossible. I genuinely love the vast majority of the artwork in my collection. Now, I would by lying if there weren't pieces that were "more equal" than others. For now, I'll highlight one of the jam pieces I've gotten done over the years. My favorite part of OA collecting is getting personalized jams designed and completed by artists at cons I attend.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I was born in 1974, so I'm squarely a child of the 80s -- which was a fantastic time to be a comics fan. We got seminal works like Watchmen and the indie black and white explosion and Vertigo...and that all led to the 90s Image revolution, which was probably at the apex of my nostalgic fandom. As a collector, I'm partial to particular characters and only buy art from artists I adore drawing characters and stories that I think are excellent.

How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I started collecting comic art about a decade ago, almost by accident. I attended a small con put on by friends and it was a spartan artist alley, so lots of creators were sitting around doing nothing. That made it easy to chat with them and before I knew it, I had agreed to have a few con sketch commissions done on the spot. I was hooked.

How do you display/store your collection at home?

My wife is gracious enough to allow the entire downstairs floor of our house to be my gallery. So I have art covering the walls of our downstairs hallway, my comic room, and our media room. But the majority of my collecting is stored in portfolios in a temperature and humidity controlled comic room.

What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

John Buscema Avengers pages (interiors, earlier the better) Alan Davis Excalibur pages (interiors) John Byrne Alpha Flight pages (interiors) Rob Liefeld New Mutants/X-Force (interiors, featuring Domino) An Arthur Adams commission with Domino and Fantomex

Moby Dick Commission by Daniel Warren Johnson
Moby Dick is my favorite American novel, and I decided it was time to start commissioning interpretations of the classic. Daniel absolutely floored me with his interpretation, capturing the majestic stature of the white whale in a way few else could. Thanks to Felix Comic Art for arranging this masterpiece.
