Q&A with Scruffy McFleabag

Q: Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?
A: It is hard to say but my favorite piece is probably Stephen Hickman's "The Invisible Thief". It is in an open space with 12 other paintings and observing it next to all these other paintings, well.... it just stands out - the luminance is something to behold and the digital scan can't capture it. Justin Gerard's "Ents Marching on Orthanc" is a close second, both because of its massive size & because it is hung in a wonderfully lit / well travelled part of my doghouse where it catches my eye every day.

Q: Please tell us a little about yourself.
A: My name is Scruffy and I'm a middle-aged parson russell terrier. My main interest is in illustration art depicting characters and scenes from Tolkien's middle earth. I live in the desert Southwest with my human caretakers. They found that buying me an occasional piece of illustration art was the best way to keep me from tearing everything apart when they go on vacation....here we are, 20 some-odd paintings later!

Q: How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?
A: My human started collecting illustration art in about 1999... first with a bunch of Dungeons and Dragons Planescape interiors by Tony Diterlizzi. It was just a random trigger - he loved the art in the Planescape manuals & in contacting Mr Diterlizzi he found out that he could actually buy the original art....the "there is only one on this planet" aspect of collecting original art is what he found appealing and is what reeled him into this hobby. He parted with the Diterlizzi pieces at the urging of a girlfriend in the early 2000s but he missed collecting and started collecting Dungeons & Dragons cover paintings by a slew of different artists who worked for TSR. He sold all the TSR pieces in 2013 and that is where I stepped in and demanded some Tolkien-related art of my own... on one paw he says he misses the Dungeons and Dragons art for sentimental reasons, but on the other paw that Dungeons and Dragons art was pretty wild and our visitors now have some idea what is going on in the Tolkien artwork and they frequently recognize scenes & characters thanks to the LoTR and Hobbit movies!

Q: How do you display/store your collection at home?
A: I have everything framed either by the artist or by a custom framing shop and place everything under museum glass. Most of the paintings I have are oils, and I know that it is highly unusual to put oils under glass, especially when they're varnished...but when there are hordes of my slobbery dog buddies and children running around, I don't see any way to avoid the extra layer of protection and hope it will be worth it in the long run. Sometimes I worry that putting everything under glass may actually be harmful (slowing the drying process, not allowing gasses to escape properly, etc) but it is a risk I have to take...a slow drying painting can't be much worse than a painting varnished with 2 lbs of dog slobber with a few scratch marks for good measure!

Q: What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?
A: I'd love to get my grubby paws on a piece by Alan Lee, John Howe, or The Hildebrandt Brothers....maybe even a Frazetta, although I take some issue with the way he chose to depict Eowyn so I tend to prefer the other plates he did of Tolkien's work. The top 5 pieces of artwork posted on CAF today that I'd love to add to my collection are: Thanos Quest Inside Cover (Bill Woo) The Invisible Thief (Greg Obaugh) Illustration from "The Return of the King" by J.R.R. Tolkien (Doug Ellis) City of the Ringwraiths- Tolkien Calendar (Dan Forman) Lord of the Rings Portfolio Plate Gollum Original Art by Frank Frazetta 1975 (Matt E.)
