Q: | Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why? |
A: | In one of my sketchbooks I have a Munchkin character study commission from the late Tommy Castillo. I never approached Tommy for a commission because his commission rates were above what I could afford. However, one Sunday morning, the last day of one of the Baltimore Comic Cons I was told by a friend that he had spoken to Tommy the night before about my sketchbook and Tommy wanted to see it. After looking through the book Tommy said he wanted to put a drawing in it. I told him I couldn't afford his commission fees and he asked how much I could afford. I had just 150 left and I told him I could afford 120 for the commission and he agreed to do something in the book. I told him I would be back in about two hours to pick up the sketchbook. About 30 minutes later I was passing near Tommy's table to get to someone else when he called me over to say he was finished. My heart sank because he had completed my commission in about 20 minutes and thought for sure I was going to have a very simple drawing without any great detail and that was not the look I was going for in my leather bound sketchbook. I slowly opened the book to his page and I was totally stunned to find that he done of his munchkin characters from his Dark Side of Oz book. He used a sepia colored pencil and the completed piece is just fantastic. A year or so later I ran into him at the Baltimore and asked to see what I had new in my sketchbook and I told him I completed the first one and was working on my second and he again asked to do another drawing in that one at the same price as before. He did a two page drawing of one of his flying monkey characters from the same Oz book using sepia colored pencil to match the first commission. I was very saddened by his passing but every time I look at the first commission he did for me it brings a smile to my face. He was a very cool guy and he is missed. |
Q: | Please tell us a little about yourself. |
A: | I am a IT Project manager in my sixties working for a federal agency. I have been married to my very understanding wife for just about 30 years and I live in southern Maryland not too far from Washington DC. I have a degree in commercial art but I haven't drawn anything in over 40 years. I always viewed art as a backup career but my life and career went into another direction and I never looked back. |
Q: | How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start? |
A: | I have always loved art in general but especially comic book art and the artist who did the work. I only read a few comic books in my life but I always like to look at what some of my favorite artist came up with every week. To that end, I stared getting signed items from my favorite artists and that evolved into getting quick sketches at cons to purchasing art available at artist tables and finally moving on to getting more detailed lager commissions drawn in my large leather bound sketchbooks and on individual loose pages. I guess I have collected comic books, comic book related signed items, statues and comic book art for over 45 years. |
Q: | How do you display/store your collection at home? |
A: | My 9x12 sketchbooks are in stored on shelves, the lager sketchbooks are stored in portfolios and the loose artwork is stored in Itoya binders and those binders are stored in portfolios in a climate controlled room. All of my artwork is stored away from sunlight. |
Q: | What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions? |
A: | I would like to have commissions from the following comic book artists: George Perez Joe Sinnott Joe Quesada David Finch Jerry Ordway |
