I do have pages from this era where the text was on a vellum overlay. However in that case usually there would be registration marks (a circle with a cross through it) taped to both the art page and the vellum page, so they could be lined up properly for reproduction. You can see an example here in the additional images, with Chris Claremont holding up the art and text pages separately, with the registration mark at the bottom of each.

I asked Tom Orzechowski how the text was added to the pages of X-Men 133 during production. He replied: "Most likely, the lettering, on vellum, was pasted onto photostats. As more and more books began to push the schedules, the practice moved to glueing directly onto the art. This allowed them to skip the step (and expense!) of making stats. How nice, meanwhile, that the art exists with all of Terry's background inks on display!"

And really, the art tells the story well enough that the text is superfluous. It is fun to see the marginal comments though.

Good grief, man, why did you buy this??  This isn't just a Grail.  It is THE Grail!  The Grail other Grails wish they could be!  And since you can't get a better page than this, you have to stop collecting!  All kidding aside, legandary Byrne Wolvie page.  Congrats and glad it ended up with you.

How wonderful that this remarkable page is not spoiled by yellowing balloons,  captions and editorial coffee stains.

I will truly never understand why this page, one of the best to ever hit the open secondary market, has had so many different owners since it first appeared. It's mind boggling. I hope that it stays with you for many years to come, Phoenix!

Galactus dominates the Marvel cosmic genre and this cover!  Bubbleheads were part of the logo for this era and this is the only time we see them dropped down into the actual artwork.

Wow wow wow.   What a fabulous story page.  I love Dark Phoenix last words on the page.  They used a rendition of this in the Marvel VS. Capcom 3 game when she wins.  "Ask not for pity from the Dark Phoenix, there is none here.".  Love it.  

I feel like Indiana Jones because THIS should be in a museum. Cheers!

Wow, just like Tony, when you see a thumbnail for a cover like this yer brain just starts at Recreation before it adjusts to how unreal this seems!  One of Byrne's greatest FF covers, huge congrats!!

A nod to past FF covers, but totally Byrne. The dynamism of Doom and the palpable engery of Terrax (Tyros) Torch. Wow.

Byrne was really firing on all cylinders here. Look at this run of covers - 257, 258, 259, 260, 261, 262 - Goodness! Congrats on this one!

Awesome is what comes to mind. Also, I forgot to tell you about the provenance. Comic shop owner William bought this directly from Byrne back in the late 1980s, your friend and now you own it. That guy had a couple of other cool Bryne FF covers but nothing as good as this. Congrats!

it's great to have friends in the hobby, especially ones that help you achieve owning as epic and strong of a Fantastic Four cover image by John Byrne as this! Three Against Doomsday! The ONLY thing that this cover is missing is Mr. Fantastic but that doesn't keep it from being one of the best from Byrne's run as our 3 heroes battle against Doctor Doom and Tyros The Terrible (I think?). Tremendous addition to your otherworldly collection from the cosmos, Congratulations!

Amazing splash.  Brunner is the definitive Doc Strange artist (or at least he is right up there with Ditko)
