Weird War Tales 73 p30 Owner: Heidjer Staecker Comment posted on 2/14/2023 I remember this one! Bought this just on the strength of the wonderful cover of battling hoplite skeletons but then I would 'cause I love greek mythology. The cover story was surprisingly long as well for these comics that usually only tended to feature shorts. These were some of the first comics I ever read. Wonderful selection in this gallery. |

Savage Sword of Conan 42 p45 Owner: Heidjer Staecker Comment posted on 2/14/2023 This is one of those 'can't look, can't look away' pieces. Doubly compelling precisely because the horror of the scene can't be dispelled easily as a mere supernatural illusion. I don't think there's anything more horrific than the reality of human atrocity. Dracula, the mummy, zombies all make me laugh. But gas chambers, human sacrifice and the thought of dark web cannibals out there scare the living be-jesus out of me! An incredibly powerful if utterly horrific piece. |

Heath - p.6 Owner: Alan Barnard Comment posted on 2/5/2023 I was 'gutted' by the end of this strip when I first read it as a kid and emotionally confused by it as well. I hadn't yet seen 'Spartacus' (the film) and the notion that sometimes dying is the only way to win does terrible things to an 8 year olds survival instincts! Lol! |

Redondo - House of Secrets 113, p.5 Owner: Alan Barnard Comment posted on 2/5/2023 Hard to choose a favourite redondo when they're all so good! But this is my pick of the bunch. Dreadful finale. Amazing art! |

Virgil Finlay, "The Sex Circle" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 Who cares what it means. Its astrology after all. If you're honest you bought it for the same reason we all love it. Its got a beautiful starry-lit finley femme in it! And why not! Such charm, such devastating beauty and moon lit romance. Who could ask for anything more? |

|
Stanislav Szukalski, Copernicus Harnessing the Sun (1973 serigraph) Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 I like Szukalski even if he did go mad the poor soul. Given his background and timeframe its clearly no accident that his work often reminds people of eastern bloc heroic monumental sculpture or totalitarian art if you like. But I don't think he was trying to emulate it so much as transform it into something else. But who knows for sure? |

|
Reynold Brown, "Nothing Ever Happens on the Moon" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 Its the lighting that holds this piece together and the mid-ground figure is just so. I think the painterly execution of the fore and bg figures is quite crude though, almost prelim, but the artist may have deliberately diffused this to center the eye in the middle of the picture? |
||
|
Lawrence Sterne Stevens, "The Adventure of Wyndham Smith" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 How unusual this is in contrast to the last illustration. It looks like what might happen if you crossed Gustave Dore with Aubrey Beardsley. Mythic quality to this piece. |

|
Lawrence Sterne Stevens, illo for "The Blue Flamingo" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 No. Not psychedelia. This is clearly 'deco' inspired and what an absolute gem it is too! |

Kelly Freas, cover prelim for The Wizards of Senchuria Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 I think I see a 'touch' of Ernst here or are my eyes deceiving me? |
||
|
Kelly Freas, "Ill Wind" illo Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 Looks like lithographic crayon on watercolour paper to me? A beautiful example of it too. You don't see that much of this technique in use anymore which is a shame because it lends a mysterious quality all of its own. |

Gerard Quinn, illo for "New Worlds" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 Well I'm at a loss here because I've never come across this guys work before but then its so much more fun to make new discoveries. I think this piece is gorgeous and such a charming send off (or reception?) |

|
Ed Emshwiller, "Orphans of the Void" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 A fun Ed Emsh. I think Emsh was the spirit of comedy for the pulps. He did so much incredible work but also so much wonderfully entertaining playful whimsy is present in so many of his works. |

H.R. van Dongen, "The Big Rain" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 And an astounding painting it is indeed! Full of elemental danger and treachery. |

Hannes Bok, Educated Wind, 1947 Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 If Finley was the pulp eras greatest technical virtuoso, Bok was surely its heart and soul. Such charm in his art and such elegant compositions. |

Virgil Finlay, illo for "The Door" Owner: Bruce W Comment posted on 1/31/2023 One of my favourite pulp illustrators. Such painstaking effort in the execution of his beautiful artworks and such love and pride in his craft for it. A marvellous talent was he that seldom failed to impress. |

Yes, I thought so. This is the very first time the iconic V for Vendetta symbol appears in the book. ![]() They also 'ripped' this scene off for an episode of the UK police drama 'Cracker' if I'm not mistaken? |

I'm not 100 percent sure without going back and having a quick 'flick through' check of the book but I think this may be the first time the iconic graffitti V image appears in the book? I know there was an earlier V but this was in the fireworks when V blows the old bailey up. I'm pretty sure this is the first appearance of the spraypainted anarchic V symbol. I could be wrong though. Will check later. Deene ![]() Yes, I thought so. This is the very first time the iconic V for Vendetta symbol appears in the book. |

Dream of the Rarebit Fiend 1907 Winsor McCay Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 1/8/2023 A lovely example of McCay. Looking at this it just seems almost 'inevitable' that he should have invented animation. His sense of motion was just so good. |

Land of Terror illustration by Roy Krenkel Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 1/8/2023 This is a nice RGK. A highly illustrative style and often very finely executed finished pieces. An an aside on this gallery, I liked Burne Hogarths Tarzan. Such a shame many illustrators are scared of going near Burroughs work incase they get sued. Corporate bullying tactics alas. His work (except for derivatives of course) should by rights be in the 'public domain' now but I think artists are still scared to go near incase of accidently violating existing 'trademarks' and I think thats a real artistic 'dampener' for the survival of the authors work into greater future posterity. |

Blackbeard and the Pirate Brain page by Moebius Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 1/8/2023 Technical virtuoso. I know he studied Dore, McCay and Finley from interviews he gave. It shows too. Loved his 'Eyes of the Cat' with Jodorowsky. |

Sgt. Rock #334 Cover - Joe Kubert Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 1/8/2023 I used to really like the covers he did for the old DC horror comics but then who didn't. Some really fun pieces. Not terribly hot on his embellishment (just my opinion is all) I always did wonder what he would have looked like 'inked' by Alcala, but an extraordinary 'layout' artist and demon 'penciller.' |

Kamandi #21 splash by Jack Kirby Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 1/8/2023 So much fun. I've often wondered if Kirby was a big 1950's monster movie fan? Just a pet theory. (bad pun) |

Frontline Combat #1 page by Russ Heath - Kurtzman layouts Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 1/8/2023 Some very nice classic EC here. I like this one in particular. What a dramatic situation to be in! Love the expression of terror on his face in panel 4 and it must have been a bloody terrible War to have had to get through (If you survived it that is!) |

Gerry Talaoc, The Witching Hour 75, “Crazy for the Kill” p. 2 Owner: Eric B Comment posted on 1/8/2023 Oh wow! A Talaoc! I used to go from shop to shop as a kid seeking this guys comics out. Such a marvellously 'fluid' style that makes his drawings seem 'effortless.' And yet so surprisingly intricate upon closer inspection. I think Talaoc had a very finely developed sense of (understated) 'balance.' |

Jungle Book from Marvel Fanfare 8 page 19 by Gil Kane & P.C.Russell Owner: F M Comment posted on 1/8/2023 A very lovely page of art from a timeless classic. I always did admire both these artists work growing up on their comics as a kid of the 70's. Kane specifically for his anatomy which I think in many ways was also reminiscent of Bridgeman who I'm certain he must have studied. And P Craig Russells Killraven. Those wonderful neo-classical figures of his dipped in liquid art nouveau. I know what you mean about the inking too. A fine pairing and there were some great collabs down the years. Buscema never looked greater when paired with Alcala for my money, or Bissette with Totleben and so on... You're probably aware of this already but, just on the off-chance you may have missed it (?) and being a 'Jungle Book' fan I highly recommend Stuart Tresilians version of this book. A legendary illustrator from the 'golden age' of book illustration. Thanks for sharing this. A rare pleasure seeing this again and glad its got a good home. |
