I was around 9 years old when this book came out. I was reading comics, but certainly not reading adult comics yet. But I was aware of it cause I saw all the house ads and the American Comics ads that said "HOT!!" and hyped it up.
Just looking at the cover, I knew it was dark and other-wordly and nothing at all like the safe "kiddie" comics I was reading.
I love this image. There's something a little thrilling when you're a kid and get just a little peak into the adult world. This and the Batman 400 covers are forever seared into my brian.
If I had to sum up the mid-1980s in one image....this would be it.
Sienkewicz has done hundreds of timeless iconic covers, but this one for sure is one of the absolute masterpieces. Can't imagine what it must be like to see it in person!
Absolutely stunning. I remember waiting anxiously for my copy of LOTDK 50 to finally get a glimpse of what a Jim Lee Batman would look like. No internet to spoil things back then. Remember having to wait til the book was in your hands to see what was inside?
I admit...I was initially disappointed. I wanted "X-Men" Jim Lee, not the style that would eventually become "Deathblow" Jim Lee. But the more I stared at it, the more it won me over, and it is to this day my favorite Jim Lee Batman drawing.
Decades later, finally seeing it in black and white made me realize what a crime it was to color this piece at all!

I've been lurking for years, marveling at the priceless gems so many people have in their collections, but this piece is the one that made me register an account just so I could comment.
If this isn't the best Batman cover of all time, it's certainly in the Top 5.
I feel lucky just to have an old beat up copy of the comic book just to sit and look at the cover; I can't even fathom how it would feel to be able to be in the presence of the real thing.
