I was told the suppliers instructed the comic book stores to destroy the first printing, but of course, not many were destroyed.

I agree. Years ago I bought a bunch of covers directly from Simon and Schuster publishing. They cleared out all their artwork.
I like it too, but when they printed the comic book, they used a solid orange background.
