Oh yeah! That one was tricky, but very satisfying!! Thanks again!
Whoa, this one takes me back - I came upon it here randomly on CAF in 2026 - I'm the guy (Relhok = Kohler backwards, a longtime nickname I use for signing stuff) who drew this one back in 2003.
I don't remember an issue with not following direction, but whatever happened, I apologize retroactively!
Nice get! I'm also a fan of Mitch O'Connell (the *good* one has an O', not a Mc!). I've got a few pieces of his myself from his fantastic year-end art sales, as well as about a dozen of his screenprints.
Mitch rules!
I've been relaxing that 'rule' lately, so if a cover is still interesting (or at least not exhausting) to me I'm open to re-visiting for a recreation.
I have a client who commissioned this as well as many other Harvey Horror pieces - some of their artists really gave EC a run for their money and are just starting to becoming more sought-after.
This is also one of the first covers I commissioned a recreation from Gary Martin about 13 or 14 years ago, such a classic!
this was my first time attempting splatter, and I found that the toothbrush method offered more 'control' than I had imagined, I'm happy to have that method in my toolbox now!
Yeah, those pre-code skull covers have really gotten a lot of attention lately, too!
Thank you! That is one of the main reasons I started doing these over 10 years ago, plus the different styles are an inking master class.
Experiment: success!
The two methods work great on this piece - it lends it a very cinematic feel, it reminds me a lot of David Lynch's Eraserhead, particularly the final scene. But with a much better-looking subject, of course! ;)
Thanks, Matt! And thanks for your patience while I figured this one out. This and the Foster strip will be winging their way to you soon!
I got to see this in person (Gary's local to me) when he was finished, and it was awe-inspiring. You got a gem!
Well, mostly I do what I'm commissioned for - which is direct recreations. Thank you!
Thanks! No, all of this last batch were commission requests, so they were already spoken for.
Thanks! This one had been stuck in my brain since I was a kid. Still haven't ever had a Clark Bar.
Hi Marc - I re-pencilled the contours using a lightbox for correct placement, but inked and did the tones freehand (no lightbox) using a printout of the original for reference.
In retrospect, the trickiest part was making the decision to go for it! Once I started breaking it down into smaller tasks and methods (substituting grey marker for the craftint & zip, hand-drawing the pattern on her skirt) it got less intimidating.
Thanks, Ray! I used a lot of dry-brushing technique on this one to try to match Flessel's original.
I hand-lined it with a Pitt pen and a ruler... and a lot of patience! ;)
Thanks!
Thanks! This one was 95% recreation, with a few details (Flag's head, some resizing/extension of some elements to allow the masthead to fit, etc) altered, though. I tried to follow the inking style as closely as possible.
Thanks a lot! Nope, I don't have any zipatone, so sometimes when I run into this on a recreation I just do small areas like that manually with a Pitt pen.
Thanks a lot, Terry! I loved doing this one, it's one of my favorite GL covers.
