Great pickup Daryl! These strips are a perfect way to pick up great quality Frazetta work at a (somewhat) reasonable amount. Love the shot of Johnny in that second panel
Superb example of why Michael remains near the top of my list of comic artists
Gosh, I really love this one! Jim definitely has a thing for frogs and this piece really goes all the way down that rabbit hole. Love the moon shaped boat and all the great detail-super cool!!
You got a good one Tyler! I love the way he inks and uses those horizontal lines, especially in the first panel. Plus, its got my fave characters!
I have always loved Tim's work and this is a superb example. Classic and memorable,
Oh wow, we talked about this but I was lazy and didnt go look til now. This is the bomb Tyler. I almost always love when Ian does an artist choice commission and this example shows exactly why.
I love that the biggest crossover in our collecting interests is music. Always love seeing things like this great piece that show off that part of your collection
Both of your commissions were delightful, but I'm giving this one a slight lead over the other. Jeremy never disappoints!
Godwin did such great work In both comics and illustration
This is so damn cool. I cannot wait to see it in person!!
It doesn't get much cooler than this. Great concept and great execution!
Cool sketch! James' finished works are awesome, but I like his sketches and preliminary works almost as much
What a fine example of Hogarth's mastery. The swirling water, the body in motion and the camera pulling in, out and then in again to a single face in the last panel. Really love this one
Fun concept and great execution! Jeremy does it again
I love these drawings Michael did for Elric. Congrats on getting a nice example.
A fine example of Vess' talent. The subject matter is perfect for his style
So glad this played out just the way it should have! Great cover going into a great collection. Congratulations
A great Ketcham! I have one from a few months later, but still in the first year that I love. Ketcham had such a disctinctive ink line, especially in his early work and it is shown off well here.
Since I am a Scorpio, I picked up the preliminary for this piece several years ago. Still hope to get a nice finished Finlay though, especially a black and white piece tha shows off his line work and stippling technique.
My own example is from just a few months later and I love it dearly, but honestly, Foster was pretty great every single year of the strip. As others have mentioned, the contrast of the humor in Aleta's ski accident and the hushed menace of the bear lurking in the thicket is really top notch and shows how it was not just the art, but also the writing and pacing that made this strip such a classic of the form. Hope I will have the chance to see it in person some day.
Nice early example. Raboy was a great follow up on this strip and kept it at a high level his entire run.
Love McCay. Nice little Sammy drawing including a sneeze!
You're on a roll with this daily Micah! Two classic Raymond gals, moody shadows and great decisions on dark, light and mixed panels to keep the eye moving.
Great example Micah! 1940 was a great year for Terry strips. Love the shadows in that 3rd panel and the way he uses the parachute and its shadow in the first panel frames the characters.
I bought the other two of the three flying heads that Jeremy posted. This one is cool too!
Not a bit surprised by how awesome this is. Tyler is definitely bringing the heat
I have a similar piece-I wonder how many preliminaries he did for the painted cover. I know he loved to do lots of drawings before getting to the final piece
The framing was all Thom Trainor. He had a great eye for framing in particular. I bought this from him a few years before he passed. Man I miss that guy.
Glad I jumped on this train myself. Simmonds really seems to be coming into his own right now. I spoke to him for quite a while at the show and his talent is undeniable as this and other things he did at the show or were in his portfolio show so well.
Great get-not as epic as the piece I got from you of course, but that was too high a bar!!
I like this one a ton. The direct look at the characters seems organic rather than forced as happens often when artists want to show characters face forward but the action would imply otherwise.
I just got the alternate version of this that wasnt used. Its super interesting to see the differences in the final piece here. in the one I have, the panel with the cat is replaced by a panel with a man on his back with the lifted open hand that appears in final version in the second panel with the alley. That alley panel has no hand in the unused version. Tim also changed the girl on the stairwell and made the girl in the lower panel a blonde rather than a brunette. The other panels really have only subtle differences in the inking rather than changing the compositions or characters
I framed it immediately(again, my parents paid for that) and though I have reframed it, otherwise it has hung everywhere I've lived for now close to 50 years. Definitely a keeper! 😜
cool pages! I snatched up a page from this story a few years back. Such an interesting pairing of artists.
A fine example from a stellar run.
half a century later, Bode's stuff is still awesome-what a tragedy he left us so early.
I had Mike on a panel I did at Dragon con and in preparation I read 30 plus issues of Warlord-and I sure remember this cool cover!
Damn George, that is one exquisite piece of comic art and comic history wrapped in a very sweet bow indeed.
Wow, great piece! Love his style and of course appreciate you putting me onto his work at Heroes!
Wood was so good and so versatile. War, Science Fiction, Humor, Horror-he could do it all and do it as well as anyone who specialized in just one genre. Great example of his mastery of the form.
