With Gene Colan, this was usually a conscious working choice, not something imposed by Marvel Comics.
Colan had a painterly style, and working smaller helped him control tones and composition, especially on Daredevil. It also sped up work under tight ’60s/’70s deadlines and translated well to print. It wasn’t standard, but Marvel didn’t strictly enforce page size, and Colan had the freedom to experiment.
Bottom line: It wasn’t about materials, just a mix of style, speed, and personal preference.
Absolutely, the Smoking Man is a perfect nod to X-Files, instantly setting that conspiratorial, mysterious tone for the story.
This page is amazing! That first panel; the Mad Hatter chilling with a hookah while Batman lurks in shadow is just phenomenal. Unreal atmosphere! Perfect choice, congratulations!
Thanks! I actually really love that lack of focus — it fits the whole Department of Truth vibe perfectly.
Yes, Simmonds actually used thin aluminum foil for the hat! The red sturdy lines aren’t drawn — they’re made from real thread that’s been glued in place. It’s a true mixed media piece. In person, it looks fantastic — a real work of art, with so much thought and care put into the details. Definitely gives off that authentic conspiracy wall vibe, but with a creative and artistic twist.
His style just hits different.
