John and yourself have been so kind to me over the years I'm happy when you post something for your collection. I am a little jealous of this one, its fantastic!

I read the whole story off the comic rack and when I went to Max Seeley's (of comic book mail order fame) home office. He had X-Men 137 weeks before the newsstand, I grudgingly paid double cover so I wouldn't have to wait.

Great page origins are always great. The sketch on the back looks like he was working out the side character from Fantastic Four 264. It was published earlier but maybe this sat around until he used it.

This is probably the masters edition, I think they used to print them off to order then Frank would sign them. I doubt there is 300 of them probably not even a hundred.

They did his most famous images in a masters edition and there was some that his son would touch up with paint etc.. to give the image some more texture though those were more expensive. I'm sure some other members would have some more knowledge.

That's a cool sketch AND story! Paul Smith was such a breath of fresh air when he arrived on the scene. I was drawn to him during his Falcon mini series then his Marvel Fanfare X-Men issue knocked my socks off, been a big fan ever since! This Spidey piece is pretty darn sweet! CONGRATS!!!

Thanks Steve I appreciate it. One of the first pieces of comic art I ever got of my favourite character. I'm happy I still have it.

Thank you for taking care of the drawing. Did you originally request this DD sketch from Byrne? Yes! I remember the Byrne Uncanny X-Men 133 cover! It was a bada$$ cover to behold in person. After I picked up the cover from Liefeld, I scanned it and made some full size photocopies before mailing it off to Wayne!

No I think I got it on eBay in the early days. Byrne didn't do many cons and he wasn't doing commissions then. I loved that cover, Liefeld always had Bryne art.

This sketch is as nice as it looks. I only sold it because Wayne loves Daredevil and Byrne. Plus he let me hold and examine his Byrne/Austin X-Men 133 cover, along with many other treasures.

GREAT piece! It could also possibly be another illustration legend, Haddon Sundblom, who was best known for his Coca-Cola Santa ads. Or even one of Sunblom's proteges, many of whom became legends in their own right (Chuck Showalter, Gil Elvgren, etc.)- they did advertising work out of a Chicago studio and often used that kind of "lush" red in their shadows.

Thanks for the insight I appreciate it. I'll look around at their work.

I love those issues as well. The original cover to this issue sold recently. There is also an unpublished version inked by someone unknown from what I remember.

This is great art, I like your version better.

OK that is pretty darn cool, this is a commission that I flipped over in my head a few times but didn't pull the trigger, congrats!

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it. You may have mixed this up with another piece. I got this commission directly from Herb and it's personalized to me. I'll update the details so people know. He was an awesome guy one of my favourite creators that I met in person.

This is like a different cover version of ASM 328. Just put the logo in place of the top panel.
