It's nice but I don't see much of Mike in this piece. I would love to have seen the pencils.

You're right about not seeing much Netzer in this piece, and the other Comet covers I inked over him. Michael Golden was the editor of the Impact line at this time, and he loved Netzer's dynamics, but thot the amount of line work was way to over the top for the Impact books, which were aimed at a younger audience. I don't have a copy of the pencils, this was so long ago...but the dynamics and the energy still remains! Hope that helps out the "look" and good eye for seeing it! Art direction was a really "good" thing working with Michael Golden as an editor, he knew what he wanted and "asked" the people to produce work fitting to the audience. Something most editors today don't have the vision to do. My direction on this was to simplify and to give it a nice "Joe Sinnott" line. Hopefully I did well.

It was the price I paid him was the thing that made me think. It was you who pushed me over and told me to stop being so cheap.

Ha! And now I know you're happy you own this...how could you not be? :)

I remember seeing the first 2 pages done on one big board at Golden's place, they were 95% done. I had to BEG Albert to purchase this art...explained to him the "historic" value of the work, both on the boards and by the artist; Michael Golden. "But it's not super hero work..." Albert told me... "Yeah, I know, and Golden poured his heart into this job, where the super hero work is nice, it's not THIS!" I replied... He has what I feel Golden's 'best' illustrated story, trumping all else. And it's a 'complete' story, not to mention Golden did the lettering as well... Such great work all thru these pages it boggles the mind!!!

I agree...Golden could really communicate with the other "Freelance Artist" in my opinion...because he came from the trenches...so he knew how to *really* art direct. To bad both DC and Marvel didn't see it that way...oh...yeah and the few "hot artists" who would listen to his sage advice to make their work better! ...go figure? -JBeatty

I inked it all, Michael! Those markers were "pen-stix" which Golden started using to ink with around that time...he thot I should give them a try also. They were very good for small detail, which there was a lot of in the 'Name series. However...we never thot they would ever fade like that...but in the 80's, we also didn't think any of this work would ever amount to much... ...ahh, well...I can assure you I inked this whole page... -John Beatty
