Congrats! This is one where you can definitely see the Frazetta touch!
I left a comment for this page in 2018. Then, after years of hoping to find it, the finale to this great story made its way to me, and it's now in my gallery : )
That's AWESOME. Thank you! BTW I posted several more Cesares in my gallery today, and will be posting more soon.
I really struggled with consigning this beautiful piece, but it makes me quite happy to see it has a loving and appreciative new home!
So happy to see this here. I was the consignor of this item and was disappointed in the auction result. Now I'm not, bc I see that it went to someone who values and appreciates it. : )
Indeed! I had originally intended to add an extra image of the cat - the shading is wonderful.
I've actually owned them for several years now, framed and on the wall in prominent places, bc my wife loves them too. And thy're huge - image size is about 21 x 27 on each. Smith worked large lol.
Very nice, Warren! I owned this back in the early 2000's. It was on the wall of the bedroom. Much to my girlfriend's chagrin!
Very nice! BTW you can see Bill Wray's color key for the BG - which includes the shout-out to his pal Jim Gomez - in my gallery (Sammy Mantis keys).
TY! Yeah, I had to get this one. Hoping a really good one from the "It's a Dog's Life" graveyard scene bubbles to the surface one of these days.
Very nice set-up. I thought about bidding on this one but wound up picking up some other pieces in the same auction
I own a BG from each of those cartoons - maybe I'll add to my R & S gallery.
Glad to see that this is appreciated. I owned the entire book and still own the cover. Maybe I will post it in my gallery : )
Powell, like Davis, had a wonderful ability to mix "serious" illustration with funny drawings, without one districating from the other, even on the same page. And (like Davis) he was an awesome horror and sci-fi artist, too. Great score!
Good eye! Kinda like that rumpled copy of Conan in the lower right corner of "The Enchantment," but harder to catch.
A great scene! The first R & S cartoon I ever watched. I was instantly hooked. I didn't even know it was on, I was just flipping through channels on my cable box. And now I own many color keys, designs, animation drawings, and backgrounds (only some are in my gallery).
Thanks, Bill! Interesting that you say that. You may or may not know this, but Alcala (like Bernie Wrightson) was highly influenced by Franklin Booth. As a child, Booth mistook the steel engravings common in the publications of the time for drawings, and taught himself to draw in that style (what Alcala called the "etching" style). : )
Wishing you the best of luck - I think your gallery deserves a nice Alcala Filipino page to go with the Redondo and the Nino!! ; )
I was the former owner of this piece, Kavi. I bought it directly from Liz Wrightson several years ago. Bernie, who I am lucky to say was a friend, had unfortunately already passed, and that is why the page is not signed. Bernie lightboxed these pages, such that if you look at the published pages you will not see pencils, like on most pages from other artists. What's really cool is that he used the same lightbox table he did for his Swamp Thing pages in the 70's. It was an old warhorse that still worked. I have a pic of one of my kids sitting and drawing at that table.
Indeed! So many of the Filipino pages are molded, insect-eaten, etc. due to the climate and poor storage decisions. I'm happy this one survived, especially in this shape.
Great page and I love that you added the historical info, including the pics.
Leaving aside how great this is technically speaking, I love the joy in it.
My pleasure! Alcala is one of my favorites, and I owned a bunch of original SW strips at one time.
I miss this gorgeous page, but I'm glad it's in your hands!
The colored pencils on black textured paper really makes this pop. Very nice.
Wonderful job! BTW, Bernie told me this was his favorite issue of HoF as a kid, and one of the comics which inspired him to become an artist.
Great example of the SSOC work by this magnificent team. Congrats!
Very cool! I own all 7 of his books, most signed of course. I think this may be the earliest OA of his I've seen?
I was the consignor of this page. Loved this issue as a kid, but thought the page should be with someone who apprecited it for more than just nostalgia, more or less. Glad it's with you now.
