I have yet to find out where it was published. Might have been in the Chicago Daily News. More info on Nelson can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Nelson_(cartoonist)
I remember holding this in my hands at a SDCC back in ca 2001. The cache of Noel Sickles Scorchy dailies saved by Bert Christman had just turned up, and I got a first stab at the stack that All Star Auctions had brought to the con. I really, really wanted this one, but had to settle with a cheaper daily.
Happy to see it again! Take good care of it! :)
Nice! This story is actually unpublished. D2014-168 "Trying to Force it" (40 pgs) written by Pat & Carol McGreal. Production and publication of the Star Wars stories were halted and will not see the light of day. You got some real gems in your collection!
Unfortunately the inked lines doesn't match the printed cover 100%. So I'm afraid this is not the original cover art to FC #275.
You did a beautiful job on these, Mike! I didn't even notice that Al didn't ink all of the pages when I recently re-read the JR JR/Williamson run. Which issues did you ghost? All of the pages in those issues or just pages here and there?
Really happy to know that they now are in safe hands!
Both are on eBay now... http://www.ebay.com/itm/222045501390
Really nice daily! Love the way he handled the black areas in this one!
I guess the reason is that there are no collections of Lubbers newspaper comics out there, so he's not on the radar for most people. Let's hope there will be Long Sam, Robin Malone, X9 and Tarzan collections with his artwork in the not too distant future.
Thanks for your comments, guys! This page is something I'd never thought I'd see and much less own. Needless to say, I'm a very happy Gottfredson fan right now. :)
Some additional info: This is a pencil drawing for the 1997 piece "In the Long Ago and Far Away", based on the Ancient Persia story. The finished piece is published in the new Carl Barks Paintings book: http://sekvenskonst.blogspot.se/2012/03/carl-barks-paintings.html
This one is a beauty. The colors, the design. One of my top 5 favourite Hurst covers.
Looking at the text, this seems to be cut from a sheet prepared for "The Bigger the Beggar" http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=W+US+++57-01 So I guess we can date this Scrooge piece to 1964, or at least the lettering. :)
I love this one. Published in Göteborgs-Posten in the 60's as an illustration when they announced the winners to one of their competitions. Rune did plenty of those illustrations in the 50's and 60's. I collected as many as I could find in the book Bamse-biblioteket volym 32. Including a scan of your piece. :)
It would be hard to find a better Gottfredson from the 30's than this. A wonderful piece!
This is the cover art for the July 1934 issue of Ballyhoo. The "Zilch College Special". I remember seeing this for sale many years ago. A great piece!
I met and e-mailed with him several years ago. Got the Glamour International book about him signed when he was a guest at San Diego Comic Con. He was, and still is, one of the best GGA artists. His Long Sam and Robin Malone both deserves to be collected in book form.
Damn! He's just soooo good. That heavy black pool of ink. Just love it.
Is it possible to see what Toth wrote behind that big block of black ink? BTW: Just noticed the 9-11 twin towers doodle to the left. Dates this one to 2001?
This is really a beautiful and rare piece. BTW: "Det lilla sjotrollet" means "The little sea troll" if you didn't know already. Got another Tenggren from the 20's in my gallery.
Wooooha! You've found yet another superb example of Murrys art. You can keep the CDs you borrowed and I'll take this drawing instead. OK? ;-)
I can't take it anymore. This is just way too much! Another beautiful and historic piece added to a fantastic gallery.
Nice piece. This was found in the trash along with the promotional parade drawing by Gottfredson I have in my gallery.
This is without any doubt the best Gasoline Alley strip original I've ever seen.
