Great addition to your collection. We were *this close* to buying it when it sold. Congrats!
And Chris is one of the nicest guys around, which makes buying something a pleasure.
And Dave didn't think he could paint. Congrats on adding this to your collection!
We were skeptical and thought we'd hire a handyman with various ladders to come in, but Donato thought we could do it and, by golly, he was right!
Always loved this sketch, Ingrid! Congrats on having it in your collection!
A favorite Chaykin! Congrats on having it in your collection. As to when it was done: it was commissioned for and first appeared in the fanzine REH: Lone Star Fictioneer #2 way back in 1975.
Also...to add to the back story. The original Conan painting (in which he has white hair and a handlebar mustache) wasn't stolen in transit to the publisher: Frank always drove into NY and delivered his art to Lancer. The painting was stolen by someone in the Lancer office when they declared bankruptcy and closed down, but not before Lancer had shot transparencies, printed cover proofs, and also given a transparency to their sublicensor, Sphere Books, in England. The Sphere edition of CONAN OF AQUILONIA has Frank's cover art; when Ace acquired the rights to the book, they ran a Boris cover (probably because they didn't have a transparency of Frank's art).
Congratulations on getting this! Just a lovely, lovely piece that I was admiring. Way to go! (And...why the hell didn't we sit down for a few minutes and talk during the show? Chalk it down on my part for having an incredibly empty head that weekend. Thanks for being there!)
Thanks Gregg & Yvette! And you're absolutely right: Virginie is so humble and an absolute sweetheart. AND, when you get to spend time with her, incredibly funny, too. What's not to love?
Wonderful addition, M&M Spatz! Annie is the best! She sold everything she brought to SFAL2 before we had a chance to look. Maybe next time!
Malcolm, you lucky devil! One of my all-time favorite Kaluta covers. Congrats! --Arnie
This is going to date us, but this was framed and hung on the wall in the 1980s before the advent of affordable flat-bed scanners. We got it when the Mac was unveiled and you could buy a whole 8mb of ram for your computer! :-)
Thanks, Frank! We talked to Greg literally for YEARS about buying this piece; unlike many artists, he holds onto his originals and is never really in a hurry to sell them. But...we fell in love with this this first time we saw it; for us, this is iconic of a Conan painting as is one of Frazetta's or Brom's. It's a different take on the character, and yet it feels "right," you know? Just as there are iconic Conan paintings by Gary Gianni (one of Gary's is, IMO, one of the best ever done) and Mark Schultz (Conan & Belit: a knock-out!): we'll never have the opportunity to own one by Frank or most probably one by Gary or Mark (people are lined up for THEIR art and we're far back in the pack), but we do have this great one by Greg and a great one by Brom. And...boy, do we feel lucky!
Eric--we were thinking we'd be able to mull things over and shop at our leisure and all of a sudden almost everything was sporting "sold" signs! Yow! We really felt lucky to get this one (but I'm sorry we beat you to it:next time, you get first shot!).
I think you're right, Ray: the only other place I ever saw this printed was in Graphic Gallery. It's definitely not in the Playboy or DH ANNIE FANNY books. I think Denis Kitchen mentions more than one AF stories that were killed when they were fairly far along in the art process and this may have been from one...
This was the cover for the first issue of the fanzine, REH; LONE STAR FICTIONEER.
