Description

Classic Neal Adams art with Adams doing both pencils and inks. I have been waiting for the right Adams page for a while and this one came by way of a trade. I know his Batman work is the most popular, but I have always preferred Neal's Deadman and Spectre. To me this is his better work. Lots to like about this page other than the great inking. Although the panel arrangements are not that dynamic, the angles and movement that Adams brought to the individual panels bring excitement to this page I like the way the Colan-esque anatomy in the second panel flows with the lines in the first panel and the perspective lines on the building tie into the third panels backgrounds. The bottom tier then changes to more horizontal lines changing the pacing again. Big thanks to Duane for letting go of this one.

I don't know what I was thinking letting this go. Thank you indeed. Man. I mean it's so crazy, that I don't even remember making the trade. In fact, I don't remember even owning the piece... wait a minute...

Great page with the top tier being simply amazing. Thanks for the nice large scan that shows off the Adams details nicely. Though my favorite Adams will always be Green Lantern, I love all phases of Neal's DC work. What I loved most about his work on Deadman is that the Adams craft is exploding with unleashed energy. Everything from the layouts to the drawing to the inks has an excitement of pushing boundaries. A standout from this early period is the variation of weight displayed in the inking. From fine detailed lines to bold brush ink, from exciting page designs to photo realistic rendering to extreme camera perspective, Neal was showcasing the potential of his emerging talent upon the comic book industry. Adams on Adams is always a good thing.

Thanks for the comments and I'd agree with everything you said except the last line. I am not a big fan of Neal going back and re-inking his earlier works. Not quite as bad as the atrocities committed by George Lucas on his Star Wars masterpieces but why fix something that isn't broken:) Vintage Adams on Adams is truly a great thing.

Re-inking his earlier works for the archival reprints seemed like a mistake to me.

Spectacular! I'm with you. I think Deadman was some of Neal's best work. Thanks for sharing.

So many great things about this page, but the panel compositions are amazing all around. Adams is a great visual storyteller!
