Description

This was a pencil commission I had completed earlier in the year (See picture below of the finished pencil version). I had Joe Rubinstein do a full tonal ink wash over a blue line of the pencils and it turned out phenomenal IMHO.

Joe took the time to bring out all the details and lay several different tones on the piece to highlight and spotlight all the details from the character accessories, to the trophies to the light source. Thanks Joe, and thanks again to Mike for a great piece.

wow. The pencils were very nice, but Joe took this to the H.N.L. ('hole 'nutha level!) Amazing.

I love Mike Nasser/Netzer. But I think the original pencils seemed to be darker or lighter in places where maybe they shouldn't have been. It kind of threw off the shadows Mike had drawn. Rubenstein's wash treatment "corrects" that issue and also makes Conan and his woman pop against the rest of the art. The way he holds her always gave me this impression that he really has to concentrate on being gentle because he could easily crush her skull. By accident, of course.

You're right, Will. The pencil line alone didn't bring this out. But it was considered when drawing it. Notice all the open spaces on Conan and the girl, and how that contrasts with the busy background in the original pencils. When Joe started doing the tones, he showed me an early version that wasn't as contrasty relative to foreground/background. He asked if I agreed with the direction. I not only said yes, but that he shouldn't worry about taking it to an extreme. And he did. It's the kind of thing that can be best done in tone but more difficult in pencil, at least when working with line art and letting such decisions wait for the finish.
