DescriptionI purchased this rare hand colored Krazy Kat daily by George Herriman at auction a few weeks ago. It is particularly rare for many reasons, including the fact that unlike most hand colored dailies that were watercolored, this one is colored in pencil or oil crayon, as Herriman did for (mostly) speciality pieces towards the end of his life. It is inscribed to 'Lee Falk Mitt Luff' and was sold through auction, by Falk's widow. The item was shipped via Fed Ex (insured) by the auction house, very well packed, and was 'lost' by Fed Ex in transit. Needless to say the piece is now considered either lost, or stolen. Should anyone be offered the piece anytime in the future, or know of its whereabouts, please contact me. Thanks.Social/Sharing |

I'm sorry to hear that an unique piece like this was lost or stolen... And even though, I hope, you'll have your money back from FedEx, of course it will not ever be a full compensation for this loss

Thank you Davide, exactly right, the money is secondary to the loss of this important Herriman work...it's ironic that Falk's widow kept the piece safeguarded for nearly 70 years, only to have either incompetence or thievery loss the piece within a few days.

Terrible news. It is an amazing piece and an important part of comic history that is potentially gone for good. I hope it turns up and all works out.

Rob, I'm so, so sorry to read about this situation with the Herriman. I truly hope that the piece was simply misplaced and turns up for you. Best of luck.

Oh, that's terrible news. I know very little actually stays "disappeared," so I will keep my hopes up for you.

Thanks all! No, the item was sent from NY, 80 miles from my house!! I would have picked it up in NY, but then I would have had to pay an additional $1000 in NY tax... not a small sum...of course with hindsight that was the thing to do. It's still lost...Fed Ex hasn't been that helpful actually. Grrrrr.......

I am so sorry to read this, Rob. I'd imagine FedEx would have a strong incentive to locate it or figure out who in their organization might be responsible given that they're on the hook for the price tag, if I understand the situation. Thanks for posting this beautiful image and relating the story.

Rob I think FedEx needs to be thoroughly investigated, they just lost the two Rip Kirbys that you had mailed out recently. I definitely would not use them again!

I definitely would not use them again!I know about that since I've been working with him to recover. Frankly I was told by Fed Ex employees off the record not to ship on any day except Monday or Tuesday, because the weekend crew is often part time and not as 'dependable' (their word) as the regular full timers. It's awful.
