DescriptionBack in July 2014 Allan Amato ran a kickstarter for his documentary "Temple of Art". Various artists donated art as some of the rewards and they even created a whole show just for the "Temple of Art" book that was kickstarted along with the documentary. Allan Amato is a photographer so he took portraits of all of the artists involved and then the artists reinterpreted the pieces in their styles. It is really an awesome concept and the art book that was created from them is pretty amazing. Unfortunately not all of the art created is included in the book. If an artist did more then one piece only one was included in the book. Along with the art each artist has a page talking about their thought process and whatever else they wanted to include. I can't wait to see the finished documentary. The main reason that I found out about the kickstarter was because J.A.W. Cooper had posted on her instagram that she had donated 2 sketches as rewards. When the kickstarter launched I quickly perused the rewards looking for Cooper's tier. Unfortunately they were included in an executive producer tier which was if I remember correctly $2000. Needless to say I didn't pledge at that time but I did keep checking back hoping that they would be moved to a tier by themselves without the producer credit. When the kickstarter was down to 2 weeks left they added some more art tiers and much to my surprise they had moved Cooper's pieces to a tier by themselves. I couldn't back that tier quick enough. The 2 pieces that Cooper had donated are sketches she had done for her "Laid Bare" solo show held at La Luz de Jesus in April of 2013. They are both gorgeous drawings. When 1xRun did a print release of "Rise" Cooper said "Rise was part of a five-piece mini-series about the stages of dealing with pain, within a larger solo show in 2013. This painting was the final stage; the triumphant rise after a crisis. The cicadas are significant, representing rebirth and metamorphosis as some species can stay dormant underground for up to 17 years until conditions are perfect and then emerge together in one epic synchronized event. True healing is not to harden externally, but to remain vulnerable and open while drawing strength from within." I am very pleased to have these stunning sketches by the amazing J.A.W. Cooper. These were actually the first pieces of Cooper's that I purchased but "Cradle" arrived before they did. Needless to say these won't be the last pieces by Cooper that I add to the collection. Her work is always fantastic and she just keeps getting better and better with each new piece. Size 5x8.25 on Moleskine sheet. Social/Sharing |
