DescriptionI don't think that I have ever posted a piece of artwork that was not already physically in my hands. However, this is an exception. It has been paid for but as the auction has just ended, it has yet to be in my hands although I look forward very much to receiving it in due course. It is a special piece from a personal perspective. I never had the privilege of meeting George Perez and will forever regret it now that he is no longer with us. I have never heard or read anything negative about him. On the contrary, he is not only a comics artist of the first rank (I was particularly impressed by the insane detail he could work into a page without ever giving the impression of clutter) but is also (and perhaps most importantly) a human being of the first rank. The latter cannot be taken for granted - particularly when the person concerned is so very talented and famous. But then again, true humility has always been the hallmark of the truly great and George Perez ranked right up there in the pantheon of the greatest comics artists that graced the medium. That he passed on so relatively young is also a reminder of the fragility of life - as well as the need not to procrastinate. I will always regret not at least sending him a card or letter of gratitude but hope that from where he is now, he will be looking down positively at these tardy words of gratitude. This cover may well be his last published work. I do not know. All I do know is that in addition to being drawn and inked by George, its subject matter also holds fond memories for me. I grew up reading DC comics but soon became less than enamored with the rather bland stories that were being produced. And so when the Marvel superhero revolution broke out during the 1960s, it seemed like a breath of fresh air. The dynamic artwork by Kirby and Ditko, in particular, and the later (albeit all too brief) stint by Wood drew me almost irrevocably to Marvel; DC became almost a thing of the past (until Ditko and Kirby joined them). However, that having been said, there was a residuary fondness for the quirky teams that were part of the DC fold. Metal Men was one of them. The other (perhaps even more bizarre) was the Doom Patrol. I continued to pick up these titles whenever I could. Perhaps what attracted me to them most was that they were NOT quite your typical DC books. When, therefore, you put the late and great George Perez together with the Metal Men (and in a cover to boot), this was something I could see myself going for (regardless of the price, well, regardless within personal financial limits, especially with the soaring prices of comic artwork generally). Needless to say, I am overjoyed to be its steward and post it here as my own personal tribute to George. May you rest in peace as your legacy of work and (above all) humility lives on in all of our lives. Social/Sharing |

This has got to be Perez's definitive statement on the Metal Men. Couldn't really ask for more out of a cover that engrandizes them to this degree.

GREAT cover and it doesn't hurt that George has stated that the Metal Men were his top favorite characters at DC (with the LSH if memory serves). Congrats.

This is a beautifully illustrated cover of DC's quirky super team and not a team that Pérez had the opportunity to draw often. I also like that he designed the composition in the same, symmetrical way that he was famous for doing with the New Teen Titans. A terrific piece and a very nice tribute you gave George in your description as well. Thank you for sharing it!

George Perez will always be known for his team shots and this is no exception. It looks like Perez pencilled a more elaborate background and thought better of it. The circular design was not obscured. So in this case, less is more. RIP.
