Description

This was my crown jewel of NYCC, a commission I spent all four days working on completing.

The Witches 5 are the sub villains of the "Infinity" Arc of Sailor Moon, and of Sailor Moon S in the 90s anime.

The manga Witches were artificial humans created by Professor Tomoe who served under Kaolinite. They had a ranking system and those who could level up high enough could become a magus like Kaolinite, which grants the privilege of contacting their master Pharaoh 90. They had aliases as students in Tomoe's private school, Mugen Academy, and were able to teach classes in each of the Academy's divisions.

The anime Witches didn't exactly have clearly established backgrounds, and were first introduced as a group of researchers who were helping Tomoe collect pure hearts and find the three Talismans. They did have some magical abilities but their personalities were more fleshed out then in the manga, as they were all killed in their spotlight chapters.

LEVEL 78 - EUDIAL (Bryan Turner): Eudial is the first of the Witches to have a go at the Sailor Senshi. In the manga she goes by the name Yuko Arimura and teaches Etiquette in the Philosophy Division. She's Sailor Mars' counterpart. In the anime, Eudial was the chief of the Witches 5 and utilized a computer program and weapons she developed to collect pure hearts and fight the Sailor Senshi. She's one of the most competent villains in the anime, having figured out who had the Talismans and staging an elaborate trap where she successfully managed to acquire them while almost killing Sailor Moon.

LEVEL 40 - MIMETE (Dan Parent): Mimete is the second Witch to go up against the Senshi. In the manga she's teen idol Mimi Hanyu and president of the Acting Class in the Talent Division. She's Sailor Venus' counterpart. In the anime, she stole Eudial's job of collecting pure hearts by killing her via ripping the brakes out of her car. However, she was the weakest of the Witches and used her job as a front to meet celebrities. Interestingly, she was voiced by Catherine Disher in the first English Dub, with Disher well known for her role as Jean Grey in the 90s X-Men cartoon. There's one particular scene where Mimete is playing Twister that is too hilarious to put into words.

LEVEL 404 - TELLU (Joe Prado): Tellu is the fourth witch in the Manga, but the third in the anime. In the manga and anime her alias is Ruru Teruno, head of Phys Ed and the Botanical Gardens at Mugen Academy and she's Sailor Jupiter's counterpart. In both continuities Tellu utilizes special plants called Telluns to extract pure hearts and souls. In the anime, Professor Tomoe gave her the position of heart hunter due to Mimete's failures, and Mimete tried to steal the job back. Tellu figured out she was being tricked and killed Mimete.

LEVEL 202 - VILUY (Matthew Clark): Viluy is the third witch in the Manga, and the fourth in the anime. She's the most consistent of the Witches across continuities, a girl genius named Yui Bido who is Sailor Mercury's counterpart. She utilizes computers and nanobots to extract pure hearts and souls from her victims. Her anime counterpart is more contemptuous of human emotions and believes they have no place in learning or science.

LEVEL 999 - CYPRINE AND PTILOL (Jamie Fay and Penelope Gaylord): Cyprine and Ptilol are the last of the Witches 5, the highest ranked and hailing from the Sorcery Class of the Professional Division. They are not twins. Cyprine is the main witch, with Ptilol considered a living extension of Cyprine's power, her "Shadow." They have the power to extract feelings of hatred and negativity from a person's heart, making them grow until they consume a person and make them become hateful and violent. They function as Sailor Moon's counterpart.

Bryan Turner did the layout for this since he worked on Eudial, the first Witch. Penelope did Ptilol next because she shares table space with Bryan. I then gave the book to Dan Parent, followed by Matthew Clark. I was on the fence about whether to go with Jamie Fay or Jill Thompson for Cyprine, but decided to go with Jamie because at some point I want a full figured Cyprine piece from Jill and I didn't want to compromise that. Tellu was last, and Joe did it for me as a gift. He finished it on the last day of the show.
