Description

This is one of the pages that Shelton Drum traded for my comic book collection (and I know he's regretted it ever since). Although this page doesn't have Spidey in uniform, it does have virtually the whole cast and some of the best images of J.J.J. that Ditko ever drew. Shelton said it may be the best JJJ page ever.

Kirby's art, while carried by his knack for breakneck action, was often sketchy during this era, but this page is filled with all the little lines and details that Mr. Ditko must have known would never show up on the printed page as clearly as he drew them due to the technology of the times. However, that is the essence of Steve Ditko. He really never gave less than his maximum effort.

I look at those little details on this page all the time and see the lampshades in the Parkers' residence, the blinds, the filing cabinets of the Daily Bugle, the tie patterns and wrinkles on the clothes of the men and women who worked there. This was as real as a superhero comic book could get. The Fantastic Four may have been the model on which most Marvel books would come to be based, but no other book at Marvel or DC had a hero as ordinary, as essentially like you and me, as Peter Parker.

And while most of the credit on this site goes to the artists, give a moment's pause to Stan Lee and his dialogue. I read it all the time and still marvel at its priceless timing. The melodrama of Peter and his sick Aunt May, the conflicted nature of Betty's feelings for Peter, and, above all, the rambling banter of a way-too-happy but still miserly JJJ that still holds its comic punch.

I think Amazing Spider-Man in the 1960s, like Star Wars in the 1970s, has become a part of the DNA of American pop culture. Even after all these years, it is one of those comics that other comics are still compared to and seldom are. Thanks, Shelton.

Nah, lot's of pages can have pictures of Spider-Man on them, JJJ being so nice he's worrying his staff is a lot rarer, and hilariously funny too! :)

I hope that this is the 'tip of the iceberg'. You have a geat diveristy of comic artwork. I especially remember this page from the Sandman storyline where one wondered if Peter Parker would continue as the ASM.

The Peter Parker 'soap opera' element of the ASM books were frequently more interesting/entertaining than the Spidey-in-costume exploits! This is a wonderful self-contained page - and Jonah's visage in the final panel is a lot more frightening than any EC Horror image I can recall . . .

A great page with real character (and to me preferable to most Spidey-in-costume pages) that shows Ditko can really DRAW! It's also fantastic in that Peter, Betty and JJJ are featured, and it contains some neat Stan Lee writing at his peak. That green in my eyes is not my natural color, but jealousy over viewing this art! This would be a key page for any collector of original comic art.

If I were to seek out a Ditko Spidey page - this would fit the bill. I love the early JJJ pages.

Holy cow. Ditko was such a unique voice in comics and spider-man created by any other artist would not be what he is because of ditko. Not to mention this is a piece of history.

You know what: I was staring at this incredible piece of history you have here, and suddenly realized how much Jameson resembles Carl Barks's Uncle Scrooge - - - am I wrong?? Look at the sixth panel, come on, it's self evident!

I am really glad that someone as thoughtful about OA as you are could land such a major page.Ditko never ever drew a boring ASM page.Look at JJJ and that smiling mug.Tell Mr. Drum I have lots of comics to trade if he has anymore pages even half as glorious as this one. On top of it all I think issue 18 was maybe the greatest of the 39 issues. It was my favorite anyways. Peter really had his back up against the wall. Major score sir.

Great page, Tim! I liked your comments as well. Interesting that all the background is in the first three (top) panels only. The expressions on all the characters are priceless, which to me was one of Ditko's strengths over Kirby. Steve could be as subtle or over the top as the dialog suggested. More importantly is the rarity of this page---how many pages in Spidey's history have ever shown JJJ smiling in EVERY PANEL? lol Thanks for sharing!

Ditko is the master, his character designs, storytelling and facial expressions are without peer.  He is and always will be the greatest Spider-man artist, imo, no one even comes close. Even with the dated fashions, his art style remains fresh and modern.  This is a super cool page showcasing the humanity of Steve and Stan's greatest creation. Love it.  Must've been a helluva comic collection!

Yeah, I bet Shelton regrets the trade. Wow! It's amazing how that JJJ character design has been followed exactly from Ditko's lead all these decades. Can't improve perfection! This is a perfect Ditko page, and a lovely bit of America's DNA. What a score. Massive congrats!

A Ditko Spiderman page is a lesson in storytelling and fine art. This one is no exception... The grin on JJJ's face is sickening!

Wow, Ditko Spider-Man is tops, love Peter & cast, but that J. Jonah smiling out creeps CREEPY magazine (though I love reading him with J.K. Simmons voice today!), big congrats!!

J.K. Simmons was perfect casting; however, my brain always "hears" Paul Kligman, who voiced JJJ on the '67 cartoon series. (Yeah, I had to look that name up.)
