Description

Ugh, sorry about the photo. I'll try to take a better one soon and update it. This huge page--18" x 24"--was done for the long-promised tabloid-sized fourth issue of Ivan's comic-book "Schizo," currently scheduled for fall 2005 (which would make it four issues in twelve years). When I bought it, in 2003 (at which time the book was scheduled for fall 2003), Ivan said this was going to be the strip on the back cover. I have no idea if that is still his plan.

I could write a long essay about Ivan's mastery of the pen stroke (this was all drawn with a dip pen--no brush in sight), about the extraordinary cartoony simplification of his characters, which remind me of Chinese ideograms... And maybe I will someday.

This is a great cautionary tale. Next time, I won't be so quick to cut off my ear.

But, dude! It's only once he cut his ear off that he became truly successful. That's the moral you should take from it.
