DescriptionThe first issue of All-Star Squadron hit the stands 40 years ago this week/month in 1981.After 2+ decades of art collecting finally obtained a Kubert cover w/Hawkman that I remember from my childhood :) Joe Kuburt drew All-Star covers #2 and 7-18. While in my opinion his style did not mesh exactly with the interior art, he drew 13 of the first 18 or slightly more than 2/3 of the first year and half of covers. Thus the memories of early Squadron issues usually have a Kubert cover attached. Kubert's portion of this cover is a full team depiction with no backgrounds. Pure All-Star Squadron characters and Pure Kubert! As shown in the additional images: The Background is a collage composed of World War II images. Based on what I saw on the back of the photo's is they were taken from what was likely a late 70's/early 80's college text book. One of the image depicts POWs about to be executed. Clearly not something generally depicted in children's comic books. Due to the low print quality/resolution of the day however it was an image that largely went unnoticed. In fact for me personally I never realized until I first saw the original cover art background. I find it odd that All-Star Squadron (but not JSA) characters on the cover are all smiling ear to ear, which I do not feel is congruous with the cover background nor the interior story. Of course Kubert's portion without the background makes a great display piece with the full team of characters jumping right out at you with full smiles. Trades for other All-Star Squadron covers are possible. Social/Sharing |

The Joe Kubert magic is on these figures. They are the hard charging patriots that take pride in taking the fight to the enemy. The smiles are there because they enjoy kicking butt and to tell the parents that this comic is safe for the kids.

Hawkman has the proper due gravitas. I'm betting Atom is scowling behind his mask, too. Kidding aside, though, Marcus nailed it with his comment. Very cool Kubert cover! I loved this series, too. DC or Marvel, I dig all the modern titles with golden age heroes. Great score. Congrats!

J H , Both you and I consider a 40 year old issue modern, perhaps we are getting old :)
40 years prior to this issues publication was the time the story took place (early 1942)
